President's Communications

May 2020

Dear fellow Conservatives,

I would like to take this opportunity to update you on matters of importance.
The Party leadership campaign continues apace, no new voting memberships are available as the voters' list was finalised on May 15th, 2020. There is much in the news, quite a bit of it is negative as factions jockey and the media reports about and sometimes sneers at the candidates. In the KATI Conservative Association Board, our policy is to stay neutral in the Leadership competition. Obviously, people will vote freely their preferences in order on the weighted ballots soon to be distributed. We will support  the new Leader once that person is elected unreservedly and absolutely.
The National Policy Convention has been postponed.  If health guidelines allow, it will be held in 2021 at dates and times to be determined later by National Council.  If  it remains impossible to hold an open gathering, a virtual convention may be the way ahead.  Therefore, for now, Delegate Selection Meetings (DSM) are also in abeyance.
We are exploring concepts for our own Annual General Meeting (AGM). The Board is conducting meetings via the 'Zoom' application which enables video conferencing. It is best suited to smaller meetings; however, it may be an option for the AGM if restrictions on public gatherings continue indefinitely. Another suggestion is that we hire an open space and hold a physically distanced meeting in the open air using a public address system. Different times and circumstances call for different measures. We have not come to a decision on this yet and no date is set at this time.
There were queries about Party policy formation in this interim period wherein we have not yet a new leader and the Liberals appear strong in the polls. The concern being that the new Leader might be launched into an election with an undeveloped policy platform. Discussion with sitting MP's revealed that election readiness is a strong focus of the Party in Parliament. There are strong Caucus Advisory Committees formed under the Shadow Cabinet which advise the specific Policy Critics. Come a snap election -the Leader will have firm policies and a comprehensive platform.
Finally, I'm very proud of our KATI Conservative Association Board for their charitable generosity. We raised very quickly $1800 amongst ourselves to assist the Lionhearts Inc Street Project -a mobile food bank which expanded to fill need in the riding and takes food to locations where it is needed most. Conservatives care about community!
